Best Time to Visit Angkor Wat: Month by Month

By San Park, licensed Angkor guide ·

Angkor is open every day of the year, and each season has its own character. Here is San Park’s honest view after more than 20 years of guiding in Siem Reap.

Cool season: November to February

  • Weather: dry, sunny, pleasant mornings (around 20–30°C)
  • Crowds: busiest, especially around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year
  • Good for: first-time visitors, sunrise colours, comfortable walking

Book your guide early in this season.

Hot season: March to May

  • Weather: very hot, often 35°C+ by midday, and humid
  • Crowds: moderate
  • Good for: early starts and long lunch breaks in an air-conditioned car

San plans these tours around the heat, with temples early, a long lunch, and shaded temples like Ta Prohm and Preah Khan.

Green season: June to October

  • Weather: short, heavy afternoon showers, with mornings usually dry
  • Crowds: the quietest time of year
  • Good for: photography (lush green, moss, full moats), budgets and peace

This is the season San most recommends to returning travellers. The reflecting ponds are full and the jungle temples look their most magical.

Khmer New Year and holidays

Khmer New Year (mid-April) is festive but very busy with local visitors. On some Buddhist holy days the upper level of Angkor Wat closes, and San will let you know if your dates are affected.

The short answer

  • Want comfortable weather? December–January.
  • Want fewer people and better photos? July–October.
  • Whatever the season, start early. Sunrise and the first two hours are always the best part of the day.
